The average American consumes more that twice the recommended amount of salt each day, some more than five thousand milligrams! It seems that almost every kind of food you consume these days, meat, drinks, dressings, etc, have some kind of salt added. There are many things you can do to lower your intake of salt on a daily basis. The first thing is never add any kind of salt when you are cooking a meal, or adding it to the water for rice or pasta. Anything that says sodium in the ingredients, means salt in one form or another. Even products that say low sodium have to have the ingredients read carefully, some of these items are deceiving.
You can start by implementing just a few of these tips in your life to cut down on the amount of salt in your diet. At first, you may find the flavor of food a little less appealing, but in the end you will not only get used to it, but also begin to see how much better food can taste without the need for adding sodium in your diet. Drinking plenty of water, at least eight full glasses a day, helps you body flush excess salt from you system.
